Album Cover Analysis

The album cover being analysed is ‘Sacred Arias’ by Katherine Jenkins
The genre of the album is classical. From a Katherine Jenkins’ fan’s point of view the album cover could easy indicate the genre of classical. But for someone who is not familiar with the genre may have to do some deeper thinking to come with the conclusion that the genre of the album is classical. Examples of the connotations that can indicate this genre is the colours and lighting being high key, also the pose of the artist indicating serenity and the title the same, being white.
The artist of the album is Katherine Jenkins. Katherine Jenkins in a Welsh mezzo-soprano singer whose first album ‘Premiere’ was the fastest mezzo-soprano selling album ever. She is also the first ever British artist to have two top ten albums in one year and is the first female to ever get two Classical BRIT awards. The image on the cover is of Katherine Jenkins, and from her success of previous albums, her image on the cover gives her album a higher status and main selling point of her success.
The title of the album is ‘Sacred Arias’ the meaning of sacred arias means pure and perfect. The title of the album can suggest the genre because many classical songs are sung in Italian hence the title being Italian. Also the reference to ‘pure’ fits in with the image of the front cover and also the artist, whose image is all about being pure and doing no wrong unlike typical artists getting photographed in newspapers under the influence of alcohol. ‘Perfect’ can coincidental be referring to the artist herself as for she is a very, very successful classical artist for her time. ‘Sacred Arias’ is also an album name for the famous classical singer Andrea Bocelli and there for can be a tribute to him because he is a very iconic classical singer.
The background of the album cover is grey, darker at the top of the album and lighter nearer the bottom. Grey is a pretty negative colour for the genre of classical but to have the colour white which is the biggest factor of selling classical music; you need a colour to which it would allow the white to be emphasised. A dark colour such as black would be too dark also the connotations of black such as death are too dark and contrapuntal for a genre such as classical. The artist of the album has a particular representation on the cover. The costume, a white, jewelled dress indicates serenity and purity it is also very elegant fitting in with Jenkins’ pose, can indicate the genre of the album. Her expression is very serene which carries on her ‘perfect’ image and stays in with what everyone expects of Katherine Jenkins. Her pose as said before, is very elegant , from a personal view it shows vulnerability but in this case of such a big artist, it shows her getting bigger and better with every single one of her classical albums and gradually showing her growing success.
The shot is a mid shot, showing only the best features of Jenkins’ to which of course is the main selling point, the lighting is high key as well again indicating to the genre, also the colours and all well fitted for the genre such as white which indicates purity.

The target audience for this type of album would be older men and women old enough to appreciate classical music. This is because the lyrics of the songs are Italian also the title is, which is off putting for a younger audience.
