Album Cover Analysis

The CD cover being analysed is ‘Portrait of an American Family’ by Marilyn Manson.
The music genre of the album is metal, more narrowed down it is called faux-Christian metal. You can tell that the album is associated with the genre, from its concept cover, juxtaposing the album title with the album image. The overall image is dark and metal music is typically associated with contrapuntal images.
The artist of the album is Marilyn Manson. Although Manson is known for his abstract persona, Marilyn Manson is actually a band to which the success of it is always pushed towards the lead singer ‘Marilyn Manson’ whose real name is Brian High Warner. From Marilyn Manson being noticed for their controversial lead singer, he became the main selling point and has been classified as a solo artist, there for his image, edited, is the main selling point on the cover allowing viewers to recognise the artist straight away.
The title of the album is ‘Portrait of an American Family’. This has no link with the image on the album and there for can suggest the genre of the type of music and also from the image of being Manson, indicates the type of music, also keeps in line with what Marilyn Manson is used to, being spontaneous and surprising with his lyrics, performances and image.
The background of the album is completely abstract, not knowing what it is, from my point of view the lower left corner and gradually to the upper left corner; coming across the cover is a brownie looking background that looks like a stretched out flies’ wing. The rest of the background is black with shadows of brown. These conventions have no link with the title of the album. The image of Marilyn Manson is scary. He gives the impression of death, becoming alive. Linking with the genre of metal but not with the title of the album, again being abstract and there for fitting in with the genre. Manson’s costume consists of highly edited make up, giving the illusion of death. One key feature which is well known of Manson is wearing one contact lens and is also included in the image. Allowing viewers to easily identify the artist. His expression looks like he is screaming or emotionless, again fitting in with the death look and the contrapuntal look. The mood given from the cover could be anger and scare from the image because it is mid action, giving a spontaneous effect.
The target audience of Marilyn Manson is teenage boys into metal music. They probably are unique in their society where alternative music is seen as a bad influence. Also they are probably well educated just keeping their education separate from their social life. I had come to this conclusion because from experience and peers who like Marilyn Manson tends to be like this.
